History

It stems from the nineteenth-century labor movement, when the term covered socialists of many kinds. One of the early parties to arise from workers' unionizing was founded at Eisenach in 1869. Eduard Bernstein challenged orthodox Marxism in the early twentieth century and helped lay the groundwork for the later movement. After the Russian Revolution the word came to mean reformist socialists opposed to revolution and to the Soviet model. The Bolsheviks founded the Communist International in 1919; reformists formed the Labour and Socialist International in 1923. By the 1990s social democrats had accepted mixed economies. It is now linked to Keynesian economics and the Nordic model.

Common misunderstandings

  • It is not the same as democratic socialism. Modern versions keep capitalism and regulate it, while democratic socialists still seek to replace it, though everyday speech blurs the two.
  • It is not communism. It rejects revolution and the one-party Soviet model and works through elections and trade unions.

Questions

What is Social Democracy?

A broad centre-left ideology that supports political and economic democracy and gradual reform toward social equality. In practice it means a mostly capitalist economy with a strong welfare state and market regulation.

Is Social Democracy left or right?

Centre-left, and often the standard example of it. It supports redistribution and public services but keeps a market economy, so it sits between the far left and the centre, a point a single line cannot fully capture.

Social Democracy vs democratic socialism?

Both work through democracy. Today's social democracy keeps capitalism and regulates it with a welfare state. Democratic socialism still aims to replace capitalism with an economy of social ownership, although the terms are often used loosely.

How does the 12 Axes test decide I am Social Democracy?

It computes your distance to each ideology across the economy, government, diplomacy and society axes. The ideology with the smallest distance is named; there is no vote count or label matching.
