Hungary is a unitary parliamentary republic and a member of the European Union and NATO. Its politics were shaped from 2010 to 2026 by national-conservative governments; since May 2026 a new centre-right government has pursued rule-of-law reforms and closer ties with the EU, while keeping strict border controls and an open, export-oriented economy.
