Ideology
StalinismFar left
A form of one-party rule that stresses rapid state-led industrialization, collectivized agriculture, central planning and authority concentrated in a single leader, justified as building socialism in one country.
Core ideas
- Socialism in one country rather than world revolution first.
- Rapid state-led industrialization under central five-year plans.
- Forced collectivization of agriculture.
- A one-man leadership cult and a police state, with mass repression of perceived enemies.
Where it sits on the 12 axes
On the Economy axis it sits at the extreme Collectivize end (100), and on Government at the extreme Security end (100), the highest value of any ideology there. Diplomacy is at 20, strongly toward Nationalism, and Society at 40, a little toward Traditional. That combination is why the test places it far from the libertarian ideologies. You are matched when your four scores are closest to these values.
The bar shows the position on each of the four axes an ideology is matched on; the middle mark is the centre.
History
The term refers to the means of governing and the Marxist–Leninist policies associated with Joseph Stalin from 1927 to 1953, and with aligned one-party governments in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The period featured extreme centralisation, a personality cult and extensive state repression. After Stalin's death in 1953, Khrushchev's Thaw and the "secret speech" of 1956 began the period of de-Stalinization. Historians still debate how far the period continued Lenin's policies and how far it broke with them.

Common misunderstandings
- It is not simply "communism": most Marxists and communists have criticized Stalinism, and many socialist currents formed in opposition to it.
- It is not defined by economics alone; the personal dictatorship and the repression are central to how historians use the term.

Questions
What is Stalinism?
A form of one-party rule associated with Joseph Stalin from 1927 to 1953. It stressed rapid state-led industrialization, collectivized agriculture, central planning, a personality cult and highly centralised authority.
Is Stalinism left or right?
Far left in economics, as a state-run planned economy, and extremely authoritarian in government. Many people therefore find a single left-right axis insufficient for it.
Stalinism vs Trotskyism?
Stalinism built socialism in one country under a single leader and a police state. Trotskyism called for permanent international revolution and workers' democracy and attacked the Soviet bureaucracy. The two were bitter rivals, and Trotsky was killed in 1940.
How does the 12 Axes test decide I am a Stalinist?
The test compares your Collectivize–Privatize, Security–Freedom, Internationalism–Nationalism and Progressive–Traditional scores with each ideology's four values. The ideology with the smallest total distance is your closest match. The other eight axes are not used.
